Local economy benefits from £36m injection from Airshow.

Farnborough International Ltd (FIL), has today announced the economic impact results of the Farnborough International Airshow (FIA), which took place in July this year. The results indicate that the event contributed £36m to the local businesses within 25 miles of the town, more than half the event’s total contribution of £57.4m to the national economy according to an independent study by Repucom on behalf of FIL.

The event, which took place from 14 – 20th July 2014, saw over 1500 exhibitors at the show just over 95,000 trade visits from all over the world and is a significant networking event for the global
aviation industry witnessed by the record breaking US$204bn worth of orders announced during the show – US$21bn going directly to the UK supply chain.

The growth in contribution can be put down to a number of factors including an increase in foreign
participation (now standing at 65%), more visitors staying locally due to the increase in hotel
accommodation in the area, FIL’s policy to employ more local contractors, the longer build-up period from March to July supported by the 1million man-hours worked on site in the month of July alone.

Key findings from the study indicate that in bed night terms, 55% of all visitors to the show stayed
with 25 miles of the town with trade visitors staying an average of 3 nights. Average spend was just
under £161 per unique trade visitor and £753 per unique exhibitor company (excluding the
exhibiting costs).

As well as highlighting the money brought in by the show’s exhibitors and visitors, the research also
highlighted that the event support 344 FTE jobs supported through contractors employed by FIL and
its exhibitors in the build-up to and during the event.

Speaking about the research, FIL Chief Executive, Shaun Ormrod said, “The event has a significant impact on the local community and we are pleased that it is able to contribute to the local economy in this way. We hope to be able to grow the events industry here at FIL and see the contribution to jobs and the economy as strong reasons to move forward with our development plans.”

Councillor Peter Moyle, Leader of Rushmoor Borough Council (RBC), said: “Rushmoor Borough
Council has always been extremely proud and supportive of the Farnborough International Airshow
and of the immense value that it provides to the local economy. Not only does it bring worldwide
acclaim to Farnborough, but it also helps to maintain the area’s strong reputation for business
growth and aviation. We are particularly pleased with the latest research showing that the event
now contributes nearly £36 million to the local economy – more than half of the national
contribution, as this, in turn, benefits Rushmoor’s businesses and residents, many of whom are
involved in supporting the show. Farnborough International Limited is to be congratulated on such a
successful result and on its continued commitment to the local area.”

Trevor Roberts, Managing Director of RME Services Ltd, the events Official Electrical Contractor also commented: “As an SME, based a little under 5 miles from the Farnborough International Airshow site, we have benefited greatly from the policies that Farnborough International have developed and continue to uphold supporting local businesses through their supply chain. In 2008, through competitive bidding, RME Services Ltd secured the Electrical contract for the Airshow, providing long term job stability for our workforce and opportunities for local suppliers. Now having successfully completed our 4th Airshow, it is evident that our turnover has increased by over 15% and staffing levels by 30% as a direct result of our involvement with the Airshow.”

Councillor Sean Woodward, Executive Member – Economy, Transport & Environment, Hampshire
County Council said:
"The Farnborough International Airshow is a key platform for the promotion of
the UK's world class aerospace and defence sector, and we are proud that Hampshire has been
home to this international event for nearly 70 years. Given the significant local economic impact of
the show, Hampshire County Council will continue to support FIA into the future."
